2021 packed a lot of cool trends like the rise of more plant-based foods, next-level kombucha, take-and-bake kits and eco-conscious packaging. But now we have a new year on the horizon. So without further ado, we present the food trends of 2022! Let’s get hungry.
- WHAT IS IT: An ethnic fusion of cultural flavours WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Naan tacos, kimchi pasta carbonara, yuzu meringue pie—who wouldn’t want it? Find the cultural fusion that works with what you’ve got and make some magic.
- WHAT IS IT: Yuzu is a tart, tangerine-sized fruit mainly grown in Asia - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Aside from being the year’s new “it” fruit, it can be used in tons of tasty ways. And customers will be here for it. Experiment with yuzu in a special house-made vinaigrette or in a feature cocktail with a little bubbly.
- WHAT IS IT: Sunflower seed everything - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Everyone’s heard of sunflower seed butter (peanut allergy sufferers’ go-to spread) but this tiny wonder is sliding into everyone’s DMs—crackers, ice cream, cheese and more.
- WHAT IS IT: Notmilk - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Though everyone loves a good almond milk latte (extra foam, no whip), producing our fave milk substitutes is hard on the planet. Notmilk uses artificial intelligence to create a plant-based alternative that reduces the eco-footprint up to 97%!
- WHAT IS IT: A colourful shrub - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Already quite popular in teas, producers are now harnessing that sweet, sweet flavour in the form of fruit spreads, yogurts and beyond (think hibiscus sangria)
- WHAT IS IT: Postbiotics - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Like popular prebiotics of yesteryear, postbiotics are all the rage with health enthusiasts. Loaded with immune-boosting power, it could be an interesting ingredient to add to one of your menu items (if it fits with your offerings). Postbiotic smoothie anyone?
- WHAT IS IT: Buzz-free bevies - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: Already popular in the beer industry, these non-alcoholic substitutes are starting to pop up in the wine and spirits world. Wellness-minded customers (who come to represent a lot more these days) are always looking for cool, new, non-boozy drinks to try.
- WHAT IS IT: Moringa, also known as “miracle leaf” - WHY CUSTOMERS WILL WANT IT: With 7 times the vitamin C of an orange and 15 times more potassium than a banana, this super duper food is going to be popping up in smoothies, sauces and desserts something fierce next year.
Here’s to a delicious 2022!
