What is a Unique Description?

As you update your menus, you might notice a field called Unique Description. This field is automatically generated and matches the Category, Item, Option Group, and Option Names when you create them.

However, you can also update the Unique Description for additional context and quick reference, especially when you have Option Groups that have the same name but apply to different items, or Options that have the same name but have different pricing for different items.

Unique Description

Consider the following:

Display NamePriceDefault Unique Description
Item 1Hamburger$18.00hamburger
Option GroupAdd-Onsadd-ons
OptionOnions$0.50onions
OptionMushrooms$0.50mushrooms
Item 2New York Steak (8oz)$32.00new-york-steak-(8-oz)
Option GroupAdd-Onsadd-ons-1
OptionOnions$1.50onions-1
OptionMushrooms$1.50mushrooms-1

By default, the system differentiates Categories, Items, Option Groups, and Options that have the same name by adding a number at the end of the Unique Description. If you have several Option Groups called Add-Ons that apply to several different items, it could be confusing when making updates to the menu.

Let’s see how we can improve the unique descriptions.

Display NamePriceImproved Unique Description
Item 1Hamburger$18.00hamburger
Option GroupAdd-Onsadd-ons-hamburger
OptionAdd Onions$0.50onions-hamburger
OptionAdd Mushrooms$0.50mushrooms-hamburger
Item 2New York Steak (8oz)$32.00new-york-steak-(8-oz)
Option GroupAdd-Onsadd-ons-steaks
OptionAdd Onions$1.50onions-steaks
OptionAdd Mushrooms$1.50mushrooms-steaks

To differentiate the Add-Ons Option Group for Hamburger and Steaks, we can update the unique descriptions to say add-ons-hamburger for the Hamburger, and add-ons-steaks for the New York Steak (8oz).

We can also quickly tell that Onions having the Unique Description of onions-hamburger are priced at $0.50, and onions-steaks are priced at $1.50.

How to Edit Unique Descriptions

To edit unique descriptions, you can follow the steps on how to edit a Category, Item, Option Group, and Option, then make the necessary changes to the Unique Description field.

Hoe to Create a Category for Alcohol Items

You can create a category that contains alcohol separate from non-alcoholic drinks. This is also ideal for separating different kinds of alcohol, such as Beer, Wine, and Spirits. To do this, you can follow the steps on how to Create a Category.
You should also set the availability to add the alcohol delivery hours based on your store hours and provincial legislation. To do this, you can follow the steps on how to Set Availability for a Category.

How Create a New Alcohol Item

  1. Go to the Overview tab
  2. Go to the card of the Category where you want to Create a New Alcohol Item
  3. Click Open Details to expand the Category
  4. Click the Add Item button, then click New Item
  5. Enter the Item Name and Description
  6. Choose Alcohol from the Tax Category in the dropdown list
  7. Set the Delivery Price, Size Description, and Alcohol by Volume (ABV). These details are required by law.
  8. Set the Calories, Deposit (Can/Bottle), and/or Package Quantity, if applicable
  9. If you are not adding the item in a category specific for Alcohol, you should set the availability for the item:
    1. In the Availability card, click the Add Availability button to add the alcohol delivery hours based on your store hours and provincial legislation
    2. Set the start (From) and end (To) times
    3. Check off the available Days
    4. Click the Add button
  10. Click the Create button, or click the Create & Add Another button to continue creating more Items

Because of government regulations on alcohol, all mandatory fields must be filled out properly in order to successfully add the item to the menu.
